Audrey Polt

Audrey Polt — 2009 English and Women's and Gender Studies Graduate

What is your job title, and what does it involve?
After receiving my degree from UNL, I obtained my J.D. from the University of Nebraska College of Law. I am now an Associate General Counsel for the University of Nebraska. As an attorney for the university, I primarily handle contract matters, including drafting, negotiating and reviewing a wide variety of contracts.

What sparked your interest in your area of study?
My passion for reading and writing is what attracted me to pursue a major in English. I pursued a major in Women’s and Gender Studies because I was drawn to the subject matter. My WGS coursework was focused on present-day issues and I was surrounded by classmates and instructors that challenged my thinking and encouraged an informed discussion of relevant topics.

What is the value of your area of study?
My WGS and English major prepared me for my career in law by developing my written and oral advocacy skills. Through the coursework of both majors I was required to formulate an opinion and offer support for my position. These majors encouraged me to be curious, ask questions, and be open to others’ viewpoints.

Were there any other experiences from your time at Nebraska that helped you get to where you are now?
UNL offered me so many ways to get involved, whether it was through participation in student organizations, employment as a resident assistant with University Housing, and on-campus events. My ability to pursue a wide range of interests enabled me to become a well-rounded student and community member which has served me well in both my personal and professional life after graduation.
