Dr. Christine Black Scholarship

The Dr. Christine Black Scholarship recognizes the importance of supporting undergraduate Women’s and Gender Studies students in their academic studies and acknowledges the potential contributions WGS students make to the WGS program, the campus, and the wider community. Two $1,500 scholarships are given to Women’s & Gender Studies undergraduate majors for the upcoming academic year ($750 per semester).

The scholarships are awarded at the Women’s and Gender Studies Graduation Reception and Awards Ceremony in April/May. Winners are notified ahead of time so they can be present.

Eligibility

• WGS major
• Freshman, Sophomore, or Junior standing
• GPA of at least 3.0 (cumulative)
• Preference will be given to those with financial need
• Previous scholarship winners can reapply

Women’s and Gender Studies Outstanding Achievement Award

This award of $500 is given to an undergraduate student who has done outstanding work in Women’s and Gender Studies at Nebraska during the last two completed semesters. This award recognizes contributions to Women’s and Gender Studies within an academic, activist, and community framework.

Students should show evidence of contributions to the campus and/or wider community as well as academic work. Submissions might include evidence of campus or community activism, internships on campus or in the community, and/or unpublished term papers, projects, or creative work. In the case of a tie, the award will be divided evenly.

The award is presented at the Women’s and Gender Studies Graduation Reception and Awards Ceremony in April/May. The winner is notified ahead of time so they can be present.

Eligibility

• WGS major or minor
• Junior or Senior standing
• Completed 12 hours of Women’s and Gender Studies courses at UNL
• Demonstrated outstanding work in Women’s and Gender Studies including research projects, creative works, contributions to the WGS Program, and/or campus/community service

Melba Cope Scholarship

The Melba Cope Scholarship recognizes the importance of supporting undergraduate Women's and Gender Studies students in their scholarship and acknowledges the contributions WGS students make to the WGS program, the campus, and the wider community. $500 ($250 per semester) is given to a Women’s & Gender Studies undergraduate major for the upcoming academic year.

This scholarship is presented at the Women’s and Gender Studies Graduation Reception and Awards Ceremony in April/May. The winner is notified ahead of time so they can be present.

Eligibility

• Full-time WGS major
• Junior standing
• 9 hours of Women’s and Gender Studies courses completed
• Demonstrated outstanding work in Women’s and Gender Studies, including research projects, creative works, contributions to the WGS Program, and/or campus/community service
• Preference will be given to those with financial need
• Previous scholarship winners can reapply

Karen Dunning Scholarly Paper/Creative Activity Award

This $400 award is presented to one undergraduate student on the basis of their project’s relevance to Women’s and Gender Studies, quality of the work, originality, and potential impact. 

The award is presented at the Women’s and Gender Studies Graduation Reception and Awards Ceremony in April/May. The winner is notified ahead of time so they can be present.

Eligibility

• Currently registered at UNL
• Does not need to be a WGS major or minor
• One submission per applicant

Judging Criteria for Karen Dunning Award

Each submitted project will be evaluated by:

1. Relevance to Women’s and Gender Studies: Although many projects will be situated within the context of a discipline other than WGS, gender should be a central construct of the project that is addressed in a thoughtful and meaningful way.
2. Quality of the Work: The projects should reflect high quality work, taking into account the students' discipline and educational level (e.g., graduate v. undergraduate).

Scholarships from the Gender and Sexuality Center

Three scholarships are available through UNL's Gender and Sexuality Center. These include:

• Fredrickson-Formanek Scholarship ($2,000)
• Crompton/Diaz-Perdomo Scholarship ($3,000)
• Roland Leavitt and Shawn Leavitt Family Scholarship ($1,200)

These awards encourage continuing education through financial support to LGBTQA students and allies at Nebraska.

The Leta Stetter Hollingworth Fellowship

For University of Nebraska students who go to Columbia University for their Graduate Studies.

Eligibility

• Graduate students at Columbia
• Preferably, but not necessarily, women graduating or graduated from the University of Nebraska

Graduate Student Travel & Research Support

Each semester, the Women's & Gender Studies program supports WGS graduate students with a one-time fund of $500. This can be used to fund expenses related to a WGS-related conference presentation, costs incurred when completing a thesis or dissertation on a WGS-related theme, or research completed to meet thesis or dissertation needs.

Up to five graduate students can receive funding each academic year—three in the fall, two in the spring. Remaining funds, if any, will be rolled over for the next academic year.

When used for travel, students must do their Concur authorization request before their trip. To make your Concur appointment, please contact the WGS Finance Coordinator WGS Finance Coordinator, Jennifer Collier.

When used for research, students will need to make an appointment with the WGS Finance Coordinator, Jennifer Collier.

Process

Once your application has been approved, the WGS Administrative Technician, Amy Peterson, will contact you regarding the reimbursement process. If the conference has already occurred at the time of application, keep in mind that reimbursement requests must be received no later than 60 days after the final day on which expenses were incurred. Please plan accordingly.
