Levin, Students Contribute to Encyclopedia of Early Modern Englishwomen

January 18, 2017

Carole Levin, professor of history, WGS affiliate, and director of the medieval and Renaissance studies program, co-edited A Biographical Encyclopedia of Early Modern Englishwomen with Anna Riehl Bartolet and Jo Eldridge Carney. Published in December, the volume is organized by categories, instead of the conventional alphabetical format. There are over 800 entries for criminals, ladies at court, entrepreneurs and builders, pirates, immigrants, expatriates, exiles, and world travelers, litigants, philanthropists, witches, writers, and many more. The volume includes famous and unknown women.

“What I find most exciting about it are the number of current and many already graduated UNL students who wrote entries,” she said. “I worked diligently with exceptionally talented undergraduates, as well as many graduate students.”

Among the graduate students who contributed, four were or are WGS graduate specialization students: Alyson Alvarez, history; Neelee Glasco, English; Holly Kizewski, history; and Catherine Medici-Thiemann, history. Other graduate students who contributed include: Cassandra Auble, Megan Benson, Anastasia Bierman, Timothy Elston, Courtney Herber, Eder Jaramillo, Amy Keller, Nathan Martin, David Moberly, Andrea Nichols, Nathan Probasco, Paul Strauss, and Amy Gant.

Undergraduate students who contributed: Elizabeth Askren, Alaina Bupp, Adam Lambert, Alicia Meyer, Brittny Ofstedal, Kristie Taylor, and Sarah Whitt.
