February 1, 2016

Michael James

Michael James, an internationally recognized quilt artist and UNL professor, will offer insight into his four decades of art making during a 4 p.m. Feb. 11 lecture at the International Quilt Study Center and Museum.

The talk, "Michael James: 40 Years in the Studio," is a benefit for the museum's programs. Tickets are $25 and include admission to the museum, lecture and a post-talk reception. Admission for UNL students (with a valid NCard) is free.

The museum is also hosting "Ambiguity and Enigma: Recent Quilts by Michael James," an exhibition on display through Feb. 23.

James studied painting and printmaking, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth in 1971 and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1973. For 25 years, he worked independently as the creative principal of Michael James Studio Quilts, exhibiting his work widely in the United States and abroad. Since 2002, James has focused his creative efforts on digital textile printing and its interface with the quilt as mixed media platform.

His studio and commissioned works are featured in numerous collections, including the Museum of Arts and Design in New York; the Renwick Gallery of the National Museum of American Art of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.; the Baltimore Museum of Art in Baltimore; the Newark Museum in Newark, N.J.; the Indianapolis Museum of Art in Indianapolis; the Racine Art Museum in Racine, Wisconsin; the Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, Vermont; and the International Quilt Study Center and Museum at UNL.
